Explore the Graying of America
in the 21st century. The Census Bureau says that from 2010 to 2020 the elderly population
over 65 is expected to increase by 35%, while the overall population will increase
by only 8% over the same time. As baby boomers move into
retirement, the ratio of elderly persons to those of working age will
nearly double from 1990 to 2050 to a projected 60 million, or about 25% of
the population. Most importantly, those 75 years and over will be an
increasingly larger proportion of the total elderly population.
